Chemist & Co Skin Clinic news and seasonal tips for healthy skin.

IT'S COLD!

Hi everyone! Is it only me that thinks it’s suddenly gone freezing?

How is your skin reacting to this sudden change in temperature?

Our skin takes a bit of a hit when the weather becomes colder, and it’s not just the cold and the wind. Going between warm indoors and cold outdoors can make your skin particularly sensitive, especially if you have rosacea and eczema.

In this newsletter, we’ll explore why the skin struggles in cold weather and what we can do to help the skin be more resilient and less sensitive.

How cold weather affects the skin

Even if you have relatively unproblematic skin, you might still notice a degree of change or increased sensitivity in cold weather.

This happens for various reasons:

  • Cold air is less humid and causes moisture to evaporate from the skin, leaving it feeling dry and tight.

  • Dry skin, if unattended, can then result in flakiness, causing a rough, uneven texture. (Horrible if you want to apply foundation!)

  • Indoor heat from warm rooms, hot showers, hot drinks, or even baking in the kitchen causes the blood vessels in the skin to dilate and can lead to flushing.

  • The most exposed areas, like lips and hands, are prone to cracking and chapping.

  • Certain skin conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea worsen in cold weather. This can lead to itching, redness and inflammation.

TIPS to help your skin throughout winter

Skincare:

Adding the following to your routine will really help your skin’s resilience during these cold months:

  • Apply a Hyaluronic Acid Serum after cleansing your face, and then apply your usual moisturiser

  • Always use an SPF over your moisturiser in the morning, or make sure your moisturiser includes one

  • If you’re going to be out in the cold for some time or struggle with skin issues, add a Barrier Balm over your SPF

  • At night use a richer Night Cream instead of your moisturiser

  • Use high quality Lip Balms & Hand Creams

  • Omega Supplements nourish the skin from the inside and are great for maintaining a skin barrier
