Make your own Body Butter

Making body butters marked the start of our skincare business journey.

We still get lots of requests for our signature body butters, but at the moment we are too busy in the skin clinic to actually make them.

So instead, we decided to share a simple recipe to get your creative juices flowing!

Body butters are great for dry, sensitive or eczema prone skin. Please note if you are allergic to any of the ingredients you need to swap to different ingredients. If in doubt, always patch test, that is, use a tiny amount on your skin and monitor any reactions before applying all over your body.

The high quality ingredients in the recipe are vitamin rich emollients that nourish your skin, with no nasty chemicals or hidden ingredients present in mass produced products.

Making your own body butters is

  1. More cost effective than buying premium store-bought similar products.

  2. Eco-friendly as packaging waste is reduced by reusing jars or containers.

  3. A great creative hobby which allows you to experiment with various textures and essential oils once you master the basic recipe.

  4. Relaxing and can even double as a thoughtful handmade gift.

Ingredients:

Organic, unrefined shea butter 250g

Organic, extra virgin coconut oil 250g

Sweet almond oil 175ml

Method:

Put the shea butter & coconut oil in a bowl.

Melt together gently.

You can use a metal bowl, over a saucepan of boiling water.

Or, use a plastic bowl, in a microwave.

Once the oils are just melted, add the sweet almond oil.

Allow to cool a little, & then put the bowl in a fridge or freezer.

When the mixture starts looking a slushy, it’s ready for whipping!

Use an electric whisk or hand whip (hard work alert!).

Scoop into tins.

How to use:

Use as many times as you want during the day.

The body butters is a ‘buttery’ consistency so it can be a bit greasy - use sparingly during the day, and ‘slap it on’ at night, especially if you have dry or eczema prone skin. Wear cotton gloves or socks to help the skin get super moisturised overnight.

Being completely oil based, there is no need for preservatives. Take care not to introduce water in the jars to avoid any contamination.

Hope you enjoy making your own body butter!
